Bare Walls and Sunshine

Written for:  Imaginary Gardens With Real Toads:  Bits of Inspiration ~ Mixed Media Art  (imagined by Susie)
Mixed media is a term used to describe artworks composed from a combination of different media or materials.  Actually as poets, writers, we really do the same thing only our art form is words. We pull from memories, surroundings, music, people, etc, and shape them into poetry.

“For today’s challenge I want you to write a poem from your immediate surroundings. For example where I am sitting there is a vase of   flowers,  silver thermos, a mailbox nameplate from my father’s mailbox, a window, a rather sickly violet, books, a clock, a tape dispenser, the whir of an air conditioner. I could go on and on.  Your poem could be a combination of what you see, hear, taste, feel, just pull from the spot where you are writing.”

Rains have finally
been run out of town.
Light smiles through
white slats of blinds.
I should fix them; they
are raised to different
heights. Right now I am
watching trees singing
in sunlight, and shadows
changing shape on bare
sage  walls, bereft
of paintings, prints,
and calendar,  all
packed away. At least
for now, skies are clear.

About purplepeninportland

I am a freelance poet, born and bred in Brooklyn, New York. I live with my husband, John, and two charming rescue dogs–Marion Miller and Murphy. We spent eight lovely years in Portland, OR, but are in the process of returning to New York. My goal is to create and share poetry with others who write, or simply enjoy reading poetry. I hope to touch a nerve in you, and feel your sparks as well.

  4. There is a melancholy plus resolute feeling in this. Moving always has been a mixed bag of emotions for me. Hope your move goes well. Thanks so much for writing!!
