Orange Brother Is Watching You

Written for:  Imaginary Gardens With Real Toads:  Flash 55 PLUS!   (imagined by Kerry)
Greetings to all poets and friends.
It is time for the Flash 55 Challenge! Write a piece of poetry or prose on a subject of your choice in precisely 55 WORDS.

PLUS!

For the OPTIONAL EXTRA part of this challenge, I have selected the novel 1984 by George Orwell. My choice was made easy by following the headlines: Classical Novel ‘1984’ Sales Are Up In The Age Of ‘Alternative Facts’

1984

I leave the direction of your poem/prose open but remind you of some of the words and phrases from the novel, which have become part of common expression and seem more relevant now than ever before:

Big Brother, Doublethink, Newspeak, Hate Week, Ministry of Truth (also of Love, Peace, Plenty), Prole, Telescreen, Thought Police, Thoughtcrime.

Tweet, tweet, how sweet
to destroy enemies
without waiting. They think
I am ignorant. That is my
strength. They think peace
answers all, but war
is peace. Cease firing
your mouth in protest.
Best you can hope
for is evading jail-
(bait). Wait, that
happened to me,
but I erased it.
Tweet, tweet, you’re beat.

About purplepeninportland

I am a freelance poet, born and bred in Brooklyn, New York. I live with my husband, John, and two charming rescue dogs–Marion Miller and Murphy. We spent eight lovely years in Portland, OR, but are in the process of returning to New York. My goal is to create and share poetry with others who write, or simply enjoy reading poetry. I hope to touch a nerve in you, and feel your sparks as well.

‘Tweet’ in itself is an excellent example of Newspeak. Not even Orwell predicted how a constant flow of individual messages could affect the dissemination of alt facts.
This response is on point, Sara.

A lot of uncertainties with the Orange Big Brother. Very unsettling post-Jan 20th!. But we have as yet to be surprised with the worse!

  11. Brilliant. And the tone–the mockery and the seriousness of it–speaks very clearly of the current situation. It seems that we are living in a world of irony, lies and quick-fire policies and rants.
