Behind the Wooden Door

Written for Poets United Midweek Motif~The Door

“Listen, there’s a hell of a good universe next door: let’s go.”—e.e.cummings

Thick wooden door is barred with iron.
She wonders why she’s invited.
In front of her stands lion-
headed knocker. She raps.
Tall, gaunt man answers.
She steps inside,
door slams shut
pit of
fire
fills
chamber.
Nice to have
a guest again,
says her host, a ghost.
She screams, bangs on locked door.
Where is my uncle? she asks.
Gaunt giant and ghost-host cackle,
This way dear, we saved room in the pot.

About purplepeninportland

I am a freelance poet, born and bred in Brooklyn, New York. I live with my husband, John, and two charming rescue dogs–Marion Miller and Murphy. We spent eight lovely years in Portland, OR, but are in the process of returning to New York. My goal is to create and share poetry with others who write, or simply enjoy reading poetry. I hope to touch a nerve in you, and feel your sparks as well.
