A New Beginning – Shay Davis

Who’s at the helm
of this strange realm?
An eagle-eyed captain
who rows with a brush,
and palette of dangerous
colors. Elephant blushes
to see cast-asides
floating in dangerous
seas. The co-pilot tries
to ease the ship in another
direction. His complexion
wan, ghostlike, his fingers
turning black.  Back to
the beginning.

I am a freelance poet, born and bred in Brooklyn, New York. I live with my husband, John, and two charming rescue dogs–Marion Miller and Murphy. We spent eight lovely years in Portland, OR, but are in the process of returning to New York. My goal is to create and share poetry with others who write, or simply enjoy reading poetry. I hope to touch a nerve in you, and feel your sparks as well.

  1. I’m afraid with such a captain… sounds like Charon to me

    Back to the beginning

This certainly is a twist, going back to the beginnings of old rather than stirring up new beginnings to move forward! Thoughtful take Sara!

Love the lines: An eagle-eyed captain/who rows with a brush,/and palette of dangerous colors” This allows the imagination to go wild!

Love this beginning – engages the reader and carries us into the poem with two short lines and their rhyme. This question could certainly apply to many things….IE what shall begin on Jan 20 in this country. It is a strange time in many places!

I like the way you incorporated the various images of the painting into your poem…especially “cast-asides
    floating in dangerous
    seas”
