When Conversation Turns Nasty

The Little Boy and the Old Man
by Shel Silverstein

Said the little boy, ‘Sometimes I drop my spoon.’
Said the little old man, ‘I do that too.’
The little boy whispered, ‘I wet my pants.’
‘I do that too,’ laughed the little old man.
Said the little boy, ‘I often cry.’
The old man nodded, ‘So do I.’
‘But worse of all,’ said the boy, ‘it seems
Grown-ups don’t pay attention to me.’
And he felt the warmth of a wrinkled old hand.
‘I know what you mean,’ said the old man.

There once were two men conversing
’bout a play they were rehearsing.
Talk turned to fight,
each thought he has right,
and polite chatter turn into cursing

I am a freelance poet, born and bred in Brooklyn, New York. I live with my husband, John, and two charming rescue dogs–Marion Miller and Murphy. We spent eight lovely years in Portland, OR, but are in the process of returning to New York. My goal is to create and share poetry with others who write, or simply enjoy reading poetry. I hope to touch a nerve in you, and feel your sparks as well.

That is so often the way of it! Sometimes better to keep quiet, lol. I do that a lot!

Ah, such drama! But the show must go on, so I hope they agreed to disagree, politely!

  5. Differences of opinion sometimes do that. Love how you displayed the Shel poem with this. A lovely and sad truth perfect for the prompt.
