After being thrust into a chair,
stared at, and grilled for hours
for a twisted crime she did not commit,
her family arrived en masse to corroborate
her alibi, showing police her train
ticket stub. Police checked out
her story, running it by a dispatcher.
They found she was telling the truth.
Stating that they were finished
with her, they told her she was free
to leave. Unfettered, she hugged
her family, and began humming
a song about freedom. It had been
a harrowing time. In bed that night,
she opened her flower-covered
journal to a fresh page, writing
her fears, as tears trickled
down her cheeks. It was easy
to be blamed for something
you did not do.
