“Most Memorable”

Written for:  dVerse Poets Pub – Character Study (Walt)
“Reader’s Digest” has had an ongoing series that they explore called “My Most Memorable Character”. We all know someone who has influenced us, done something selfless for someone or had been a pillar to the community (or not). A relative who was quick witted, or had a special skill of which people were aware and by which they were influenced.
Tell us about this person through their actions (without naming the character). Let their quirks and traits speak for them.

Annual dance at neighborhood pool,
neighbors and friends attended.
while liquor flowed, he played it cool,
disappeared, changed, and wended

his way through the crowd in costume–
Arabian dress–that of a sheik.
Those besotted saw him illumined
in spotlight–a ghost, they shrieked.

His sense of humor was matched only
by his kindness toward loved ones.
If a friend was ill or lonely,
his support was second to none.

An attentive listener, patient with all,
flocked by children for his fairy-tales.
All gifts received left him enthralled.
A man such as he forever prevails.

About purplepeninportland

I am a freelance poet, born and bred in Brooklyn, New York. I live with my husband, John, and two charming rescue dogs–Marion Miller and Murphy. We spent eight lovely years in Portland, OR, but are in the process of returning to New York. My goal is to create and share poetry with others who write, or simply enjoy reading poetry. I hope to touch a nerve in you, and feel your sparks as well.
