The Vision

Written for:  The Sunday Whirl, Wordle #248

Words:  close, scar, fine, unholy, hills, vision, climb, hide, naked, prophet, sin, light

Not a prophet,
he had a vision.
Saw himself naked
in evening light.
Scars covered
his body, a sight
that made him
want to hide.
Under a fine mist,
he climbed a hill, struggling
with each step, aware
that if he closed
the distance, reached
the top, he would see
those sins for which he had
not yet atoned. As he neared,
an unholy shriek sounded,
rebounded off the hillside.
Rocks slid, lightning flashed–
then all was dark.

About purplepeninportland

I am a freelance poet, born and bred in Brooklyn, New York. I live with my husband, John, and two charming rescue dogs–Marion Miller and Murphy. We spent eight lovely years in Portland, OR, but are in the process of returning to New York. My goal is to create and share poetry with others who write, or simply enjoy reading poetry. I hope to touch a nerve in you, and feel your sparks as well.

So he never knew…much like us destroying the world yet expecting a quick fix by someone else a few years on.

Great story-telling…..it’s the little touches of detail (like the fine mist and the unholy shriek) that really bring it all together.

  5. Tight, good piece. Made me read it over a few times.
Too bad about that end result caused by the unholy shriek, but it seems it all goes dark for many of us before we get to atone for many of our sins.

Correction suggestion on the next to your last line : change the spelling to “lightning” from
    “Rocks slid, lightening flashed–”
