Marriage Options

Written for:  Poets United Midweek Motif~Marriage

“The point of marriage is not to create a quick commonality by tearing down all boundaries; on the contrary, a good marriage is one in which each partner appoints the other to be the guardian of his solitude . . . . ”  ― Rainer Maria Rilke, Letters to a Young Poet

Husband and husband
wife and wife,
we have so many options
in this life.

Some stay wed
others come apart.
Who knows what is in
someone else’s heart.

Some married couples
make you scratch your head
in amazement at the match–
rye to white bread.

Poor to rich
young to old
there is always
a story to be told.

About purplepeninportland

I am a freelance poet, born and bred in Brooklyn, New York. I live with my husband, John, and two charming rescue dogs–Marion Miller and Murphy. We spent eight lovely years in Portland, OR, but are in the process of returning to New York. My goal is to create and share poetry with others who write, or simply enjoy reading poetry. I hope to touch a nerve in you, and feel your sparks as well.

Opposites attract, they say, and sometimes in some marriages that curious mix of contrariness can spell out success in the LTR. I am more surprised that marriages between people who everything in common and who are so much alike last at all! Nice write!
